Using the lasso tool, form a selection around the bird, click generative fill, then generate. This will tell Photoshop to replace what’s in the selection with surrounding pixels in the Yakov Livshits image. Be sure to leave the text prompt empty unless you want to add something in its place. Here’s what our image looks like after Photoshop fills in the blank areas of our canvas.
We’re committed to delivering the best creative tools, services and value to our members so you can keep pushing the bounds of creativity. Central to the update is the official integration of Adobe Firefly, the company’s new AI engine, directly into Creative Cloud software. Firefly uses generative AI to allow users to create or modify images, graphics, and other media through simple text prompts.
As well as reviewing dash cams for TechRadar, he also has bylines at Wired, T3, Forbes, Stuff, The Independent, SlashGear and Grand Designs Magazine, among others. But more importantly, the results can be truly jaw-dropping. This entire background was created by computer in just a couple of minutes. Asking Photoshop to add a water fountain to the left of the car produced some interesting results, varying from a huge green watering can to what we’ve included above. It’s not exactly a fountain, but the complexity here is impressive. Click the arrows to cycle through these three options, or click the Generate button again to have the AI create three more.
AI is an extra tool if you want to produce images, but image production is not photography. I’ve actually been using it for creative purposes, imagining a stuffed Kingfisher by a river or even in ancient Japan. The output may not always be realistic, but it can be quite artistic. It’s not always all that photo-realistic, but I can see that coming in time. This is the accelerated death of photography as any form of documentation, not to speak of creativity. The problem is when made-up images are passed as photography (i.e. something based on reality).
You can keep doing this until the AI creates what you’re looking for, or change the text prompt and try again. When making your selection it is best to include a bit of the surrounding area. Generative Fill struggles when there’s no context to your selection – such as when selecting an area of perfectly blue sky – and performs better when some of the neighbouring grass, gravel or fencing is included. We found this also helps to give the AI a sense of scale, especially when people are included in the selection.
This has been the case long before so-called “AI” tools (the topic of them not being actual AI is for another day). Why would anyone be interested to watch a photo if they know everything in it could be fake? Painters whose job it was to reproduce the real world accurately did suffer.
If one wants to not use a technology but stay with something simpler or more constrained that’s OK. To me, photography is about capturing a fleeting moment under the right angle and in the right conditions. That takes time, dedication, some talent, and a bit of luck. The “guidelines” are overly broad and the warnings sometimes pop up for the most inane and harmless things, like just fixing a bit of background in a landscape photo.

After using generative fill, you’ll have three variations to choose from which can be found in the generative layer properties. As previously mentioned, Photoshop generates a new layer, complete with a mask, so your original image remains untouched. If you aren’t satisfied with the results, you can click the generate button, which provides you with three new variations. You can repeat that process as many times as you like to get the results you’re looking for. Delete any variations you rule out to keep the file size down. Using the photo from the previous section, we will fill the white areas of our canvas.
Generative Fill and Generative Expand work on any document you can open in Photoshop. Users can upload assets, bring them into Photoshop, then use Generative Fill to add or remove parts of an image and Generative Expand to expand an image. Each time you click “Generate” a new “Generative Layer” is created. With the introduction of this new layer, a user must then “save as” or “save as a copy” to preserve their edits. The feature enables you to create gradients in just a few steps and now includes new on-canvas controls which help you have precise controls over many aspects of the gradient in real-time.
It’s known for having more algorithms and options than other generators, but it’s also extremely easy for novice users to get the hang of. NightCafe is based on a credit system, but it has a generous free tier, and plenty of options to “earn” credits by participating in the community. You can also buy credits and use the code UNITEAI for a 15% discount. Whether you want to create AI avatars for yourself or your team, need to render beautiful images of your product in different scenarios, or just want to have your own AI model to generate ideas with your style. The process is simple – Visit the website and choose from 5 different image dimensions, enter your search term, and like magic the website will auto-generate images. We might be a little biased since this is the first of many AI tools that will be launched by the unite.ai team.
(If you know, you know.) As an adventurous creative, there is nothing Deanna loves more than taking her son and three dogs on excursions in her Jeep. In fact, a dream of hers is to buy an RV and see the world. Once you sign up, click the download button to get Photoshop.
His work explores the tension between the natural world and its simulated counterpart— between organic and inorganic, digital and analog. The process allows for more artificial serendipity — the happy accidents and novel ideas that normally take time to stumble upon. Generative artists leverage modern processing power to invent new aesthetics – instructing programs to run within a set of artistic constraints, and guiding the process to a desired result. In contrast to traditional artists who may spend days or even months exploring one idea, generative code artists use computers to generate thousands of ideas in milliseconds. Select an area in your image, then describe what you’d like to add. If your answer is “Yes!”, then Generative Fill is the perfect feature for you – designed for these and many more uses.

Using the appropriate shape for the item you want to add is an excellent way to give Photoshop more details on what you want, resulting in better output. To make a selection in your image, you can use the select subject tool (1), any of the marquee or lasso tools (2), and the object selection, quick selection, or the magic wand tool (3). The selection appears with the marching ants (4) around it, then reveals the generative fill tools in the taskbar (5).
